Whether you are a child or an adult and have a guinea pig as a pet, you often times become so attached that you find yourself treating the guinea pig as though it is a baby itself. And, the guinea pig actually is somewhat of a baby. It requires a great deal of love and affection and a very nutritious diet. You may also find special occasions that you would like to dress your cavies up. And, for these occasions there are many guinea pig costumes in which you can choose. Or, you can make your own, which are quite simple. The following is a list of instructions that will have your guinea pig outfitted for whatever occasion in a few simple hours.
The first step in making your guinea pig costume is to purchase the appropriate cloth. You will want something that is soft and comfortable for the cavy. If you are doing a Fourth of July outfit then you will obviously want to pick out material that has red, white, and blue. If you are making a jean skirt than you would want soft denim. Felt is another material that is very comfortable for the cavy to dress in. Stiff fabrics that are rough should be avoided.
Step Two
Once you have the material for your cavy costume, you will need to measure the length and width of your cavies. Using a tape measure, measure around the cavies belly. Next, measure the length from behind his ears to his rear end. Also measure from where his collar will be to the length of the arms and legs.
Step Three
Design a pattern for the cavy costume. You will need to use your measurement and sketch a pattern for the costume. This will need to be done on a very thin sheet of paper. Then, cut the pattern and place it on the fabric, securing it with pins.
Step Four
Cut around the patter and leave a little extra bit of material for the area where you will be stitching.
Step Five
Sew the fabric together, stitching the costumes at the seams.
Step Six
Cut holes the holes for the cavies arms and legs will go and then hem the holes.
Step Seven
Try the costume on your cavy and make any necessary alterations.
Guinea pig costumes are great for any occasion, and the cavy truly does seem to enjoy getting dressed up and having the extra affection showered on him. It is very important however, not to leave your cavy unattended in the costume as this could lead to catastrophe since the cavy could get caught up in something and injure them. It is also important not to leave the cavy in the clothing for more than a few hours. For your next special occasion, you just may wish to make the cavy the hit of the party with the latest style in fashions!
